Light Amplification that Simulates Ethereal Rope

While watching Zach give the cats a good workout by means of a high-power laser pointer, a thought occurred to me:

When used in a particular way, a laser pointer is essentially a virtual tether with which one can literally slam a cat against a wall.

You can also fling a cat down the stairs or even into a hapless victim’s lap as he sits distracted by his game of Super Smash Bros. Fact is, a cat will pretty much go anywhere a glowing red dot goes. They'll even do it in teams!

Whenever all four of us have to be away from the house at the same time, we make sure all the kittehs are closed off downstairs mainly because Dioji is a moody terrier and cannot be trusted. This past Thanksgiving Day was one of those times and Zach was assigned pet segregation detail. He proceeded to do this, believe it or not, by leading them all down in one big group with his laser pointer.

I was hell of impressed.

Alright, I know the title of the post made it sound like some major scientific breakthrough had been discovered. And sure, adding “major” might be too much, but Zachary’s discovery really is quite a breakthrough!

Have you ever tried to herd cats?

  1. DKN says:

    Agreed! A total breakthrough.

  2. Mister Major says:

Adding Major is never too much.

  3. Kirk says:

Somehow, I knew you were going to say that…

  4. AmyH says:

    Zach is majorly smart.

  5. Kzinti says:

    Hmmm… The Unified Cat-String Theory…

  6. Lauri says:

Whoa, that is SO cool! I am going to use Zach's method to get my three crazy kittens into their room at night! :DWould you thank him for me, please?

  7. Kzinti says:

Well, the title was a good play on the LASER acronym…

  8. Lurkertype says:

I have herded cats before, sometimes unaided and sometimes with the laser, but DAMN! I didn't learn so well at such a young age, nor have I ever managed THAT many kittehs.Zach is awesome. An inspiration to us all.

  9. lauowolf says:

You should be hiring him out for big buck.

  10. Roboco says:

i've heard that herding cats can be quite difficult. 😉 do you think it works on puppies too?

  11. MiamiShyner says:

Apparently I'm late to the party, this being the first time I've heard of Dioji, but I truly love the name and always wondered what would be the best way to spell it. Your version is a winner! Also kudos to Zach for his kitty jedi light mind powers.

  12. Kirk says:

"Apparently I'm late to the party, this being the first time I've heard of Dioji…" She really doesn't come up much for some reason. In fact, it was over three years ago I posted the pic showing just why she doesn't dig cats…"…love the name and always wondered what would be the best way to spell it. Your version is a winner!"There's a bit of a debate about that in the CimC household. Karin spells it with a "g" instead of a "j" but I prefer to go the phonetic route to avoid any mispronunciations.

  13. Kirk says:

"Well, the title was a good play on the LASER acronym…" Thanks. And as far as Unified Cat-String Theory goes, we all know cats can't unify for long an anything. That's a big part of why they haven't kept up with us in the sciences. Have you seen their hadron accelerator? It sucks. Won't even turn on.

  14. Kirk says:

"…nor have I ever managed THAT many kittehs." Careful. People might think I'm actually a mentally deteriorating spinster with bad teeth and a penchant for pushing shopping carts all the way home. 😛

  15. Kirk says:

"I am going to use Zach's method to get my three crazy kittens into their room at night! :D" Be sure to get one of these. Those small ones that run on watch batteries are a rip-off. These SE Laser Pointers are powered by three AAA batteries and they last forever. Plus, you get an 8-LED flashlight setting as a bonus. Only six bucks at Amazon.

  16. Lauri says:

Ooooo, thanks! I will for sure!!

  17. Kzinti says:

I think their hadron ring has holes along the side and jingle bell mice particles in the middle so they can smack the mice particles around the ring until they approach light speed. It's actually quite sophisticated for it's simplistic engineering.

  18. Lurkertype says:

Kirk, we need a post about ALL the CimC critters. I'm always forgetting Dioji, Raven, etc.Even if you don't have pix, just list them.
